-All Adam’s kynde be Ordayned to dye.—Third?

“Amber Jade and Kandi Kane? Those are the prostitutes attacked?”

“Yes. And Amber reported that the man said something to her.”

“You deserve punishment?” Palmer asked.

“Yes.”

“Three lines, three victims?” Jacob commented.

“The attacks on prostitutes correspond to the living part of the writing. Which stands to reason that there will be three murder victims.”

“We’ve already had two with Chaudry and Belden,” Palmer added.

“Chaudry and Belden?” Compton asked with more force than Jacob felt was warranted.

“Yes, Nassir Chaudry and Hans Belden. Why?” Jacob was curious how he would respond.

“Nothing,” Compton said with a more even tone. “I just didn’t know their names.”

Jacob glanced at Palmer, who didn’t indicate he noticed. Jacob decided to let it go for now. “If he stays true to form, an assault will happen next, then a murder.”

“The question is who?” Palmer asked.

“With the prostitutes, it will be impossible to narrow it down,” Jacob said. “But maybe once we have our meeting in London tomorrow, we’ll have a better idea about the murders.”

“London? What meeting?” Compton asked.

“It’s with a man from a company called Paragon. Some kind of financial group, it looks like.” Palmer said. “We’re meeting a bloke by the name of Whittaker.”

From his face, Jacob couldn’t tell what Compton was thinking when Palmer mentioned Paragon. Was the lad trying to get in on going with them or was there something else? He would make a note to ask once they went, through. Hopefully. Compton would tell him the truth.

No matter what the answer was, though, Levine made it clear not to push out Palmer. And he needed Compton to work on the assaults and meet with the victims. Palmer was still the best choice to accompany him.

“When do we go?” Compton asked.

“I’ll need you to follow up with the prostitutes. And there’s also a neighbor that needs interviewing.” Jacob knew Compton wouldn’t be happy with this. “Also, read through the notes. Knowing what you do about the writings, I need your perspective on our guy. How and why is he choosing his victims?”

Compton straightened from where he was leaning over the desk. Jacob could tell he wanted to argue. Compton looked at Palmer, who was geared for a fight. Jacob braced himself to intervene, but Compton’s expression changed.

“Yes, sir. Whatever you need.” Jacob was surprised by the response, but grateful. “So, Palmer, get Compton up to speed. I’m going to check on my wife and mother-in-law.”

“How is Mrs. Jones?” Compton asked.

“She’s better,” Jacob said, then realized Compton shouldn’t know. “How did you know?”

“Mrs. Murray mentioned it.” Compton was matter-of-fact, as if he and Vickie were bosom friends.

“When did you see my wife?”

The sergeant at least had the sense to look embarrassed.
